2023-24 EQAO PRESS RELEASE

October 1, 2024

The Rainy River District School Board shares the findings from the EQAO assessments.
The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has announced the outcomes for the 2023-2024 assessment period. This represents the third round of the newly updated and digital provincial assessments. The notable alterations to these assessments, in conjunction with Ontario's refreshed curriculum, have produced results that create a new standard for schools and school boards in Ontario. For reporting purposes, Levels 3 and 4 results are combined, equating them to a score of 70% or higher.

During the 2023-2024 academic year, 148 Grade 3 students from the Rainy River District School Board participated in the Primary Assessments, resulting in a participation rate of 96%. In the Reading component, 64% of these students met the provincial achievement standards (Levels 3 and 4). Similarly, in Writing, 64% of Grade 3 students reached the provincial standard, reflecting a 9% point increase from the previous year's 55%.

In the Junior Division, 149 Grade 6 students participated in the assessments, resulting in a participation rate of 95%. Of these students, 68% met the provincial standard in Reading, which represents an 8% decline from 2022-2023. In Writing, 61% of Grade 6 students reached the provincial standard, marking a 13% decrease from 2022-2023.

Mathematics remains an area for growth. During the 2023-2024 school year, 50% of Grade 3 students met the provincial standard, while in Grade 6, only 27% of students who completed the EQAO Mathematics assessment achieved the provincial standard. Among the 176 Grade 9 students assessed, 42% reached the provincial standard.

For the 2023-2024 school year, RRDSB had 208 students who were first-time eligible for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). The participation rate reached 93%, while the success rate remained at 70%, consistent with the outcomes from 2022-2023.
“Student achievement continues to be our top priority,” said Director of Education Heather Campbell. “We remain committed to supporting the success and well-being of all students by building their skills and proficiency in reading, writing, and math.”
