The Course Coding System

When you are selecting courses, it helps to know how course codes are generated.
Courses are identified by 3 letters followed by a number and a letter.
For example: MTH 1 W

The first three characters indicate the subject area course code as prescribed by the Ministry of Education Common Course Codes. The first letter indicates the subject discipline, that is, the curriculum document in which the course is listed:

A = Arts
B = Business
C = Canadian and World Studies
E = English
F = French
G = Guidance and Career Education
H = Humanities and Social Sciences
I = Computer Studies
I = Interdisciplinary Studies
L = Native Languages
L = Classical Studies & International Languages
M = Mathematics
N = First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Studies
P = Health and Physical Education
S = Science
T = Technological Education

The next two letters refer to specific courses in the curriculum document.

The fourth character indicates the grade level of the course:

1 = Grade 9
2 = Grade 10
3 = Grade 11
4 = Grade 12

Languages (L) courses use A,B,C,D, and E as the fourth character to represent the level of language learning.

The fifth character indicates the course type:

W or D: Destreamed (grade 9 only)
L: Locally Developed (grades 9 and 10)
D: Academic (grade 10 only)
P: Applied ( grade 10 only)
O: Open (grades 9-12)
C: College (grades 11 and 12)
E: Workplace (grades 11 and 12)
M: University / College (grades 11 and 12)
U: University (grades 11 and 12)

A sixth character is usually added for school use.
