Health and Physical Education Curriculum

Grade 9-12 Health and Physical Education Curriculum

Promoting the healthy development of all students, as well as enabling all students to reach their full potential, is a priority for teachers and staff. Students’ health and well-being contribute to their ability to learn in all disciplines, including health and physical education, and that learning in turn contributes to their overall well-being. The health and physical education curriculum engages students in learning about the factors that contribute to health and well-being and in building skills to live healthy, active lives.

Grade 1-8 Health and Physical Education Curriculum

In September 2019, an updated and inclusive Health and Physical Education curriculum for Grades 1-8 was implemented in classrooms. It will help students develop the skills and knowledge they need to lead safe, healthy and active lives. The curriculum identifies and describes the knowledge and skills that students are expected to learn in each grade. Students’ achievements are assessed and evaluated based on these expectations.

Sexual Health
At the Rainy River District School Board, we know that families play a vital role in supporting student success. Like you, we feel there is nothing more important than the health and safety of our students. For this reason, we support open communication about teaching the Human Development and Sexual Health expectations in the elementary Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum (HPE).

The Rainy River District School Board schools often cover the Human Development and Sexual Health expectations in the elementary Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum with elementary students in the spring. By then, teachers have developed strong relationships with students and have a clear understanding of their maturity levels. This helps ensure that we teach the curriculum in a developmentally age appropriate manner. The Human Development and Sexual Health expectations in the elementary Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum represent less than 10 per cent of the entire HPE curriculum.

Our schools will continue, as we always have, to have lessons around Human Development and Sexual Health that are sensitive to the subject matter and the students. Human Development and Sexual Health is an integral component of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum.

Parents can request an exemption from instruction related to Human Development and Sexual Health expectations in the elementary HPE curriculum using the Exemption from Instruction in Human Development and Sexual Health Form. This form is available upon request in schools and is also available in Board Forms on the Rainy River District School Board website.

The following document shows the learning expectations for Human Development and Sexual Health in Grade 1-8.
